Ever since its original location in hip Chinatown in 2003, J Salon has been one of Honolulu's mane attractions. It's all due in part to owner Joe Randazzo, who has 29 years of experience under his belt. (He's coiffed models for New York Fashion Week and worked abroad in the U.K., Japan and Germany.) Recently, the Vidal Sassoon-trained stylist added a boost to Honolulu's style quotient by moving his salon to a sleek 3,800-square-foot space in Ward Plaza in Kakaako. Now, clients-including local personalities Mahealani Richardson and Marisa Yamane-can relax on the landscaped terrace before and after luxing up their locks. Here the dapper stylist shares his salon essentials. -JL

For years, J Salon has delivered the long, layered beach-y hair that locals and tourists request in order to blend with their tropical surroundings- but this season, the popular style gets a makeover. "Our finishes are looser at the ends, not so polished," explains Joe Randazzo, co-owner of J Salon. "Even when using an iron, we finish the ends in alternating directions for a looser-looking effect." Color clients are asking for the "grown-out highlight" (darker on top, lighter toward the ends), Randazzo reports, and stylists are obliging, using balayage ofer traditional highlighting methods.

J Salon co-owner Gary Casupang attributes much of the salon's success to its ongoing in-house education and dedication to training. "We aim to exceed our clients' expectations and establish genuine relationships with them, and we stick to doing what we know best-hair," Casupang says. Co-owner and hairstylist Joe Randazzo oversees the technical skills and creative areas of the team, while Casupang manages the operations of the salon. The 2,500-square foot salon features a modern and understated decor, with deep charcoal gray walls and chrome, slate and dark wood accents, creating a sultry atmosphere. The minimalist design allows the product lines and stylists to be the focus. The salon's diverse clientele can choose from a range of hair services, including cuts, color and conditioning treatments customized to suit their individual needs.

“I wouldn’t want to be in a strip mall,” says J Salon owner Joe Randazzo. “I like mixing the old architecture with the new and having lots of space.” Indeed, the salon is open and spacious, with a clean, modern look. The clientele, like the neighborhood, is diverse, ranging from twenty-something, trendy fashionistas to conservative businessmen. Even with a relatively small staff of 11, including the “guard dog,” Sally, J Salon’s business is flourishing. “I felt like there was a need for something like this here,” says Randazzo. “People are starving for something different.” Cuts range in price from $40 to $90, depending on the stylist. 1128 Nu‘uanu Ave., Ste. 103, 550-4441.
